“I won’t forgive you, Jaka, if you stay here! Go
now!” he shouted, his voice nearly gone behind heavy
coughing from the thick smoke.
With a heavy heart, Jaka crawled out of the
burning house in tears, leaving his uncle still trapped
under the beam. As soon as he got out, Laras ran to him,
crying hysterically and hugging Jaka’s body, which was
covered in soot.
The house kept burning until nothing was left,
and Prawiro Ngabdul was never seen again. That night
left a scar in the hearts of Jaka and Laras forever. Even
though their uncle had often treated them harshly, the
pain of losing him still struck deeply, leaving a wound
that would never fully heal.
