their meal. They knew they couldn’t stay too long, or
their uncle might get angry.
“Excuse us, Mr. Harjojo. We’ll be going home
now. Thank you again for the meal,” said Jaka, smiling
and bowing slightly. "You're welcome, Jaka. Thank you
for accompanying this old man for lunch. Take care,
Jaka, Laras," said Mr. Harjojo as
Jaka and Laras respectfully shook his hand. Jaka
and Laras walked home. Along the way, they saw many
people busy working in fertile gardens filled with crops
ready for harvest. When they arrived, their uncle was
already waiting with an angry face.
PARR!
A loud slap echoed—his uncle had struck Jaka
with burning rage. Jaka could only lower his head and
didn’t dare to fight back. Meanwhile, Laras, standing
behind him, glared at Prawiro Ngabdul with silent anger.
"Why are you so late? Have you become lazy
now?" snapped Prawiro as he snatched the money Jaka
had earned with his hard labor.
"I'm sorry, Uncle," Jaka said softly, his eyes still
looking down at the floor.
