The morning sun had risen and was shining on a
remote village called Karangjati, hidden among the
mountains and dense forests of West Java.
“Hey, get to work quickly! Don’t be lazy,
HURRY UP!” shouted Prawiro Ngabdul harshly at Jaka
and Laras.
Jaka and Laras could only nod and rush off to
work. The journey to the market was very far, but since
they were used to it, it didn’t feel too difficult for them.
When they arrived at the market, Jaka told his sister to
just sit and rest because he felt sorry seeing her having a
fever. Jaka told his sister to just sit and not help because

sack of rice to the storage warehouse. One by one, he
lifted the heavy sacks onto his thin shoulders. The sun
was already rising higher in the sky, and beads of sweat

“Jaka, here’s your pay for today. Come have
lunch, and bring your sister too,” said Mr. Harjojo,
patting Jaka on the shoulder.
