“Rice for the market,” Rudi answered with a
simple smile, then added, “I’m Rudi, Miss.”
“Margaretha,” she replied, still a little shy but
increasingly intrigued by the young man.
They talked for a long time, and Margaretha felt
an unusual comfort when speaking with Rudi. Although
they came from vastly different worlds, their hearts
seemed to speak the same language. They began meeting
in secret more often, talking about everything their
hopes, dreams, and the world they wished for, a world
without barriers or divisions.
But their relationship soon became complicated.
Margaretha’s father, upon discovering their meetings,
was furious. He strongly opposed their relationship and
even threatened to drive Rudi out of the village if he
continued seeing his daughter. “You’re a European girl,
Margaretha! Don’t get caught up in this foolish emotion.
That native boy has nothing to offer you. They are
