Andy looked at him with questioning eyes, but
before he could speak, the old man turned to Mep. “You
have done your duty well, Mep.” Mep nodded slowly.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t honest from the start, Andy,” he said
softly. “I was created by him, to accompany you—to test
your courage, your loyalty, and your heart.”
Andy froze. “So… you’re not a real friend?”
Mep smiled thinly. “I am a real friend. It’s just
that I’m not human.” Andy paused. “So all this… is just
a test?” Mep shook her head slowly. “No. This is a
meeting. With yourself.”
There was a moment of silence. Then the old man
took a step forward, holding out a small pendant-like
object with a round glass in the center and a fine needle
that kept moving.
“This is no ordinary compass,” he explained. “It
will point you to the one place you need most—not the
one you want.” Andy held the pendant in his hand, while
Mep stared at the old man in silence.
